Pitch

This week we needed to present a pitch to staff, other students and members of the pavilion dance society about or installation idea and the general theme and plan of the project. We started by getting together as a group and collecting all notes and research we had done on the project. We opted to create our presentation on prezi as opposed to powerpoint as we felt it would give a more professional appearance which was key to us especially as we would be presenting to members of the public as well as of our course. The presentation would require for us all to present however it was universally felt that it would be a good idea to have one strong speaker who would spear head the presentation allowing the rest of us to relay all our own relevant information in a manner that flowed and gave that all important feeling of professionalism. I feel like our presentation went very well as we kept to the specified time limit and were able to answer any questions that the audience had competently, however I feel like although I was fairly confident going in my presentation skills are still something I need to build upon.  The other focus of the week was ensuring we had permission to film on all of the desired locations, once we had been given the go ahead we began to make an actual plan for the shoot. We planned out the best route in order to be able to get all four locations completed over two days, also to think about was looking after the actors on set and also ensuring that all the equipment would be kept safe and secure.

Real Life Researh

Pamela Ngo - Dancer 2
Radoslav Kanalev - Dancer 1
This week we started to put our research into motion. We began by deciding that our instillation would be best presented in the corridor area of the building so subsequently booked out this space. We then got feedback from the designated members of the group who had recce’d the location and came up with our final four locations. Next we began our search for credible dancers to participate in our video. Initially we wanted to use four completely different dancers each one having their own decade allowing for us to get the best of each dancers potential onto the film. We were given some contacts from the pavilion dance center and began to get into contact with a wide variety of dancers, however due to our scheduling times and minimal funding it was quite hard to find dancers that not only would fit perfectly into our film but also were available for us to film. Eventually we found two different dancers who were suitable and opted to compromise with our original idea and use just the two dancers over the four decades. As production manager I also began research into finding suitable props and clothing for our dancers in each of the individual decades. We finished the group meeting off with creating a schedule and plan for the next several weeks to ensure that we stayed up to speed and on topic over the course of the project.

Blue Sky Research

This week the group met again to discuss the research each member had gathered over the weekend. Firstly we had four members research a specific decade of hip-hop. I myself was tasked with researching the 90s. To me the key way to research the decade of hip-hop was to split it into three sub groups. I began by researching the fashion of 90s dancers, it was apparent there was a clear look that the 90s held and that was brightly coloured baggy clothes most usually multiple colours. I then went on to looking at the style of dancing they did in the 90s I found several videos on Youtube that highlighted the specific differences between 90s hip-hop and other decades of dancing. Finally I looked at the music that was big in the 90s especially around the hip-hop scene. It was important to get a clear idea of the music, as we would need to create our own original soundtrack for the instillation. Once everyone had presented their research on the project we then began to discuss how we would actually execute the idea of our video.  I proposed the idea of splitting the video into 4 different segments that could be projected alongside each other on the wall, with each segment coming to life in chronological order. On top of our research into each decade we also needed to focus on finding locations, which John had done some research into finding several possible locations for each decade. In order to select the best possible locations it was decided that some members would recce the locations over the next week.
